Charles Eugene (“Gene”) Bowman, age 85, passed away Thursday, February 20, 2014, at Abernethy Laurels in Newton, North Carolina.
Born April 7, 1928, in Catawba County, North Carolina, he was the son of the late Eva Mauney Bowman and Henry Harrison Bowman. Mr. Bowman worked for Scronce Pump Company and then Bassett Furniture, where he worked for 20 years in the trucking department. He then resided in Oak Island, where he worked at Fox Squirrel golf course in Boiling Spring Lakes.
He attended St. Paul Lutheran Church in Startown all his life until 1986. He then moved to Oak Island, where he attended St. Peters Lutheran Church and was very active in the choir and church life in general. He was a faithful and active member of Lions Club International for over 50 years and was the recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award. After retirement, he was a volunteer for many years at Dosher Memorial Hospital in Southport.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 58 years, Dorothy Scronce Bowman; three brothers, Fred, Cecil and Richard Bowman; three sisters, Linda Huffman, Lucille Lynch and Catherine Cline, and step-grandson Letch Frisbee Jr.
He is survived by two sisters, Thelma Smith and Marie Scronce. Other survivors include his two sons and daughters-in-law, Charles Eric and Rosemary Bowman, Scott and Karen Bowman, all of Newton; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Beal and husband Marty of Maiden, North Carolina, Leah Shull and husband, Andrew of Cary, North Carolina, and Clayton Bowman of Newton; one step-grandson, Rodney Frisbee of Newton, and six great-grandchildren, Sophia, Amelia, Eva, Isabella and Samuel Beal, Abigail Shull; and three step-great-grandchildren, Justin, Kyle and Erin Frisbee.
The funeral service will be held on Sunday, February 23, at 2 p.m. in the St. Paul Lutheran Church-Startown in Newton, with Rev. O. Ralph Kraft Jr. officiating. Burial will follow at St. Paul Memorial Park in Startown.
The family will receive friends on Saturday, February 22, from 6 to 8 p.m. at Willis-Reynolds Funeral Home in Newton.
