Roberta (“Bert”) Lynne Woods, age 53, who resided in Dosher Nursing Center in Southport, went to her heavenly home to be with Jesus on Saturday, March 23, 2013.

Bert was born in Newport, North Carolina, on October 29, 1959, the daughter of the late Robert C. Woods and Viola (“Vi”) Woods. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Jon Woods.

Surviving are her loving and devoted caregivers, aunt Dianne Jones of Oak Island,  aunt Marilyn Tripp of Shallotte Point, and her uncle Robert (“Bo”) Register of Oak Island, along with many special family members, loving cousins and wonderful friends.

Bert was a member of Ocean View United Methodist Church in Oak Island. She was a 1978 graduate of South Brunswick High School. She later attended UNC-Chapel Hill and Cape Fear Technical College, and was employed with Duke Power for a short time.

Bert was a bright, intelligent lady who loved to play the piano, sing in the church choir and cross-stitch. Although the OPCA disease debilitated her physically through the years, she continued to inspire, motivate and encourage others to appreciate and love life to the fullest, regardless of one’s circumstances. Her love and faith in Jesus Christ gave her the ability to endure and persevere, along with her bright, magnetic smile that brought great joy to others. Bert was a friend to all, and never passed an opportunity to visit the residents in Dosher Nursing Center in her wheelchair and give them a positive word or hug.

The family would like to thank all of the staff at Dosher Nursing Center for their tender loving care of their “Bertie,” to Dr. Holland for his wonderful medical services, and to her favorite “domino” players Simon and Janet Shew and Uncle Bo. We thank God for the many beautiful years we enjoyed with Bert and rejoice in knowing she is walking, dancing, singing and talking again!

A Celebration of Life service will be held at Ocean View United Methodist Church on Tuesday, March 26, at 2 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to Ocean View United Methodist Church (Building Fund), 8400 East Oak Island Drive, Oak Island, NC 28465 or Dosher Nursing Center (Activities Dept.), 924 North Howe Street, Southport, NC 28461.

Private online condolences may be sent to the family at

Brunswick Funeral Service, Shallotte.
