A “scenic challenge” is how race director Chris Kostman described Badwater Cape Fear, a 50-kilometer or 51-mile race through the maritime forest and along Bald Head Island’s East Beach.

That’s quite the understatement.

Eighty runners in all—24 in the 50K and 56 in the longer run that extended to Fort Fisher twice—participated in Saturday’s event.

The overall winner was Gabriel Helmlinger, 47, of Cambridge, Massachusetts, who completed the 51 miles in eight hours and 12 minutes—19 minutes ahead of Craig Wheeler, 52, of Burlington, Kentucky.

In the “shorter” 50K race—that’s 31 miles—the winner was Christopher Ricks, 36, of Raleigh in a time of six hours and five minutes. Henry Layne, 45, of Jonesborough, Tennessee, was second, nine minutes behind.

Top female finishers were Katherine Plichta, 27, of New York, New York, whose nine hour and 13 minute clocking was fifth best in the 51-mile run, and Georgianna Quarles, 59, of Duck Key, Florida, completed the 50K race in six hours and 47 minutes to place fourth overall.

The AdventureCORPS Badwater event, the first contested on the East Coast, attracted runners primarily from the eastern third of the country. Florida lead state-based participation with 19, followed by North Carolina with 14 and New York with nine. Two runners were from Alberta, Canada. The average age was 45.

Race director Kostman, also “chief adventure officer” for AdventureCORPS, said Sunday, “We will absolutely be back for the second edition of the race on March 21, 2015. Seemingly all of this year’s 80 runners promised to be back, and bring their friends, so we’re hoping to have 150 runners tackle Badwater Cape Fear next year.”

The event is the opening leg of a three-race series that includes California races at Salton Sea and the famous 135-mile race from Death Valley to Mount McKinley and return.

The Bald Head Island visit offered a pleasant jaunt compared to those sweltering challenges.

“We are extremely pleased with the inaugural Badwater Cape Fear,” Kostman said Sunday. “After a week of rain, the weather was fabulous, the locals of Bald Head Island and at Fort Fisher were extremely supportive, and the entrants gave us rave reviews about an extremely challenging, but breathtaking, race course.

“The variety of terrain and sights along the route is unparalleled,” Kostman continued. “The start of the race at Old Baldy Lighthouse and over the creek on the wooden bridge, a straight traverse across the middle of the island through the forest canopy, a lap around the eastern end of the island and its oceanfront homes, running the length of South Beach, trekking through the Maritime Forest Preserve, and then the beach running between Cape Fear and Fort Fisher provided a scenic challenge for all the runners.

“Living on ‘island time’ made it a true getaway from the real world, and many of the runners brought their families along to enjoy Bald Head Island and to support them when they passed by the Bald Head Island Conservancy four times, plus at the finish line.

“Bald Head residents also came and lent their support at the finish line as well, adding a personal touch to the hospitality shown by the folks at Coastal Urge, who hosted the pre-race social mixer, and by chef Chip Pridgen and his team at Maritime Market, who hosted the post-race breakfast.

And Kostman said a special, added benefit was the opportunity to help a worthy cause.

“In particular, Bald Head Island Conservancy was a fantastic host for the race. We literally based our race headquarters on their campus, and their staffers, Poul Lindegarrd and Jane Baldridge, took great care of us,” Kostman said.

“In turn, we are pleased to shine a light on their important work and to raise money to support their efforts.”
