Pair of wins for BCC hoops over the weekend
Brunswick Community College made short work of Caldwell Community College and Surry Community College on Saturday and Sunday at West Brunswick High School. The Dolphins hammered Caldwell 107-63 and then held off a game Surry team on Sunday 77-65.
Six BCC players scored in double figures on Saturday, led by Jeremy Basnight’s 14. Cornell Holmes and Lamonte Theus pitched in 12, Raheem Lofton 11 and Terneil Rhodes and Ike Nixon 10 points each. The game was reminiscent of last season’s team with coach Walter Shaw emptying his bench and getting all 14 players some quality minutes.
Sunday was a tougher game as Surry shot a good percentage and stayed in a game that BCC should have put away earlier than they did. The Dolphins might have been in trouble were it not for an extraordinary game from Theus who hung 28 points on the visiting Knights. Theus was playing in front of family visiting from Norfolk, VA and really put on a show for his folks.
BCC hits the road over the next seven days for what coach Walter Shaw calls “an NBA week.” The Dolphins play a doubleheader with the women’s team at Mount Olive on Tuesday, then travels to Sanford, NC to face Central Carolina Community College on Thursday. The ‘Fins return home for the weekend though, with a game scheduled against Wilkes Community College on Saturday, at West Brunswick High School at 3 p.m. Check Wednesday’s Pilot for the full story.
