Stay safe this holiday shopping season

Now that we’ve feasted on turkey and all the trimmings, many of us turn our attention to holiday sales. Stores get crowded, especially during popular Black Friday and other holiday sales, and taking extra precautions can make the difference between becoming a victim or staying secure.

District attorney Rex Gore reminds us that being smart and staying alert can keep you from becoming a victim.

McCrory sits down with Pilot

Republican gubernatorial candidate Pat McCrory sat with Pilot staff writer Ben Brown on August 28 during his regional tour, which included a stop at Brunswick Community College. In the video below, McCrory discusses the “Louisiana politics” he sees jamming the N.C. Department of Transportation. He later discusses why he believes Brunswick County is in a good position for reliable employment. A full story on McCrory’s visit will appear in the September 3 edition of The State Port Pilot.

Landing a big interview without even trying

Many of you may have been surprised to see that this week’s State Port Pilot carried an interview with Federal Communications Commission chairman Kevin Martin. He is, after all, a major national figure and someone you might not expect to see interviewed in the pages of a small-town newspaper.

But what might surprise you even more was that we didn’t actively seek out this interview ourselves. The folks at the FCC called news editor Lee Hinnant to offer us the opportunity to have Mr. Martin pay a visit to our offices in Southport and talk about the impending switch to digital. We had already devoted a Portfolio front to a detailed exploration of the issue, but of course we didn’t turn down the offer.
