Engineers meeting today to check safety at second bridge

Thursday, December 4th, 2008

Engineers and others are meeting Thursday morning at the second bridge to Oak Island site to determine if it’s safe to continue construction, Jerry Lawrence said. Lawrence works for Mid-Atlantic Insurance, and is risk manager for Lee Construction of the Carolinas, the company building the bridge.

A girder fell shortly before noon Wednesday, killing one man and injuring two others. Three separate investigations will look into why the girder fell, Lawrence said. What Lawrence said he could confirm was that the girder that fell was secured at the time and that all three men were wearing required safety equipment. Emergency personnel who responded to the scene Wednesday also said the men were wearing their equipment.
