The two Johnie Vereens

Will the real Johnie Vereen please stand up?

Tax administrator Sheila Bell put a lot of work into her costume, transforming herself into a lookalike of mayor Johnie Vereen. The mayor took it all in good fun and posed for a picture before heading to a meeting. Bell acted the part perfectly, and even promised town employees raises.

Several town staffers donned costumes which meant many characters handled typical town business Friday, including a Sumo wrestler, witch and a receptionist in need of a good dentist.

South Brunswick picks off win in Shallotte

Saturday, September 13th, 2008

South Brunswick intercepted three passes in the fourth quarter to hold off West Brunswick 25-15 in high school football action last Friday night.  The Cougars again had troubles holding onto the ball, fumbling three times and losing two of those, but the team’s defense came to the rescue with a brilliant fourth quarter.

South (2-0) couldn’t contain the Trojans’ elusive quarterback Ryan Hill, who rushed for 150 yards and two long touchdown runs.  But once South went ahead 18-15 courtesy of Kenny White’s second touchdown of the game with less than 11 minutes to play, West was forced to abandon their devastating option attack and throw the ball, which led to the three interceptions.  Greg Gilbert snagged two errant passes and Rashawn Jenkins clinched the game with a third.  Gilbert ran the first interception back for a touchdown after snapping the ball up off the top of his shoelaces and racing the other way.  That athletic maneuver set off an avalanche of turnovers that eventually buried the Trojans, who fall to 1-2 on the season.
