Ferguson commits to N.C. State

Monday afternoon, South Brunswick defensive standout A.J. Ferguson committed to North Carolina State University to play football next season. Ferguson just completed a senior season in which he had 10 sacks, two interceptions, two defensive returns for touchdowns and also caught seven passes and one touchdown as a tight end on the offensive side. South wins West wrestling tournament

South Brunswick’s wrestling team took first place at West Brunswick last Saturday, beating out six teams, including West and North Brunswick, for the Cougars’ first dual tournament win of the year. Individual weight class champions from South were Matt Craven (103), Jeromy Roundtree (119), Charlie Martin (125) and Rick Logan (285). Robert Capps, Sebastian Brothers, Jonathan Marvin, Justin Stickle, Stephen Ikalowych, Robert McHenry and Roy Lague all garnered second place finishes.

South knocks off Orange; Forest Hills next up

South Brunswick dramatically eliminated Orange High School from the 2AA football playoffs last Friday night in Hillsborough. The 27-20 triumph was scarred by an ugly fight after the game that saw a South Brunswick assistant coach hit in the head with an Orange player’s helmet, and the Cougs also lost quarterback Zack Alcorn to a likely ACL tear. But no amount of distraction could shadow the fact that the Cougars are in the third round of the playoffs for the first time in the school’s history.

BCC holds off pesky Lenoir squad 95-84

Brunswick Community College fought through an oppressive zone defense by visiting Lenoir Community College for a 95-84 victory. The Thursday night win put the Dolphins at 9-0, but it certainly wasn’t as easy as some of the ‘Fins’ prior triumphs. Chris Hovermale led BCC scorers with a season-high 17 points, and he was aided offensively by Mik’yel Nero’s 15 points, Cornell Holmes, who pitched in 14 off the bench, and Lamonte Theus, who scored 12. BCC is on the road this weekend for a pair of games against junior varsity opposition, Belmont Abbey and Limestone.

South, North spring first round upsets

South and North Brunswick entered Friday night’s first round playoff games considered underdogs, but both emerged victorious on the road in exciting contests. South came out 41-32 winners at East Duplin, while the Scorps held on for a 21-14 overtime win over Southwest Onslow.

Pair of wins for BCC hoops over the weekend

Brunswick Community College made short work of Caldwell Community College and Surry Community College on Saturday and Sunday at West Brunswick High School. The Dolphins hammered Caldwell 107-63 and then held off a game Surry team on Sunday 77-65.

South, North hit the road in state playoffs’ first round

Fresh off of heavy losses last Friday night, South and North Brunswick will travel this coming Friday in the first round of the North Carolina high school football playoffs. South, the number 11 seed in the 2AA East with an 8-2 record, will head to East Duplin, the number six seed with an identical 8-2 record. North Brunswick (6-4), the number 10 seed in the 2A East, visits Southwest Onslow, the number seven seed with a record of 8-2.

BCC escapes Mt. Zion, thumps Mount Olive JV

Brunswick Community College’s basketball season officially kick started last weekend with a pair of victories over visiting Mt. Zion on Saturday and Mount Olive’s JV on Sunday. The Dolphins beat the Warriors 89-84 in a game that wasn’t as close as the score suggests, and then repeated their victorious efforts on Sunday with an easy 116-88 win over the visiting Trojans.

South Brunswick back on track in win over East Columbus

South Brunswick pounded East Columbus into submission on a frigid Halloween Friday night, prevailing 43-28. The Cougars amassed 469 yards on the ground and Kenneth White, Quan Ray and Ray Ray Bellamy all had two touchdowns as South got back to winning ways after Monday’s disappointing loss to South Columbus.

Brunswick Community College 2008-09 preview

The Dolphins are coming off of their most successful season in the school’s history, and they hope to build on last year by becoming the first North Carolina junior college to ever qualify for the National Tournament, held annually in Kansas.
