Safety tubes help in rescue

Bystanders on the beach employed the new rescue floatation tubes Wednesday during the first save utilizing newly installed equipment and signage at Oak Island.

Oak Island Fire Department and Water Rescue responded to a call at Seventh Place West about a swimmer with a small boogie board who was reportedly out too far in the ocean and unable to return. Someone on the beach grabbed one of the new rescue tubes and swam toward the victim. A second bystander grabbed another tube from a nearby station and assisted.
