Several local organizations are working together to host the first of what they hope will become an annual celebration for Southport.
The inaugural Nature Fest is planned for May 2 in Southport and on Bald Head Island, and a planning committee is asking the public to mark their calendars and to consider getting involved in planning or sponsoring the event.
Among the planned activities are nature tours, presentations, boat and kayak outings, an excursion to Bald Head Island and children’s activities.
In addition, Trinity United Methodist Church will serve a pancake breakfast, followed by a program entitled “Birds of Wonder.”
Organizations and individuals are also invited to help by becoming either a sponsor or a partner, through donations or in-kind contributions.
Among the organizations represented on the committee The Adventure Kayak Company; Bald Head Island Conservancy; Southport’s Board of Aldermen, Office of Tourism and Economic Development and Recreation Department; Coastal Water Watch; Priority Sailing; Sea Biscuit Wildlife Shelter; and the Wild Bird and Garden store.
The committee has defined the purpose of the event as to:
n Increase awareness and appreciation of the balance between human activity and the natural world;
n Bring tourists to Southport to appreciate its heritage and beauty and inspire them to support efforts to protect it;
n Provide learning activities for children and adults, and
n Provide healthy recreation in harmony with the natural world for people of all abilities.
The committee is also inviting businesses, government organizations and non-profit partners to set up nature-themed tents or display tables for visitors on the Fort Johnston lawn or, in case of inclement weather, the city gymnasium.
Applications will be screened by the planning committee. There is no fee for non-profit and governmental organizations, but there is $20 fee for for-profit organizations.
All vendors are asked to bring a prize to be displayed at their table and raffled-off.
Tax-deductible contributions should be sent to Cape Fear River Watch, 617 Surrey Street, Wilmington, NC 28401, and marked “Southport Nature Fest” on the memo line.
