Michael Jay “Mike” Phelps, 70, of Southport (Boiling Spring Lakes), North Carolina passed away on Monday, January 16, 2023, following a lengthy illness.
Mike was born in DeFuniak Springs, Florida on April 26, 1952, to the late Henry Worden Phelps, Jr., and Vernell Floyd Phelps.
Mike was a police officer for many years, having worked in the Charlotte, North Carolina Police Department, Oak Island, (Long Beach at that time), North Carolina Police Department, and finally in DeFuniak Springs, Florida.
After his work as a police officer, Mike and Patsy returned in 1996 to Oak Island and he began his career as a contractor and as building inspector for the town of Oak Island.
Surviving are his loving wife of 31 years, Patsy Lummus Phelps; a daughter, Lisa Kennedy (Mark) of Winnabow, North Carolina; three sons, Dane Quick (Sherry) of Southport, Jesse Phelps (Billy Jo) of Banner Elk, North Carolina, and Kelly Phelps of Wilmington, North Carolina; a sister, Becky Sizemore (Bill) of Summerville, South Carolina; and 10 grandchildren, Bladen Quick, Reagan Quick, Regina McDonald, Wyatt Phelps, Savannah Phelps, Corey and Logan Kennedy, Evan Gescat, Olivia Gescat and Laura Phelps.
A private celebration of life will be held in Mike’s memory.
